I’ve been making an effort to bring my lunch to work so that I might reap the benefits of saving money and eating healthier (more healthy?). So tonight, after 12 hours of work, I decided to throw some quinoa in the microwave to take with me tomorrow.
Since I live like a bachelor, I cook pretty much everything in those gladware disposable containers. And I’ve never had a problem. Until tonight.
I noticed sort of a burning smell once the microwave stopped. I opened the door and SMOKE and BURNING poured out. The plastic had melted and the quinoa had transformed into charcoal.
Now my apartment smells distinctly of burned plastic. And chemicals. And I’m trying not to throw up. And I’ve had to open all my windows. And now it smells like a refinery AND is fuh-reeeeezing.
I would have posted a picture because, wow, but I had to get that shit out of here asap.
Here is my attempt to salvage the experience by keeping my glass half full: 1- the mess was surprisingly easy to clean up, 2- despite the five inch layer of (toxic) smoke in my kitchen, my smoke alarm didn’t go off— although this may be a bad thing, now that I think about it, and 3- I won’t feel the least bit guilty about picking up some Chipotle for lunch tomorrow. I’ve earneddddd it.
